South Indian films are becoming a big attraction at the box office in the post-pandemic times. While there were very few successful South biggies in Hindi before the Covid 19 pandemic, things have completely changed in the last few years. Here’s a look at South Indian films challenging some seriousness at the Hindi box office.
Unni Mukundan starrer Marco is the latest offering from South cinema that is making waves in the Northern circuit. Starting at Rs 1 lakh on its opening day in Hindi, the A-rated bloody action thriller grew very well in its second week to create a record of earning Rs 1 crore on its 13th day (New Year) in the Hindi belt. Is ready. The hike from day 1 to day 13 has been nothing short of a dream. As per the trends, Marco is expected to end its theatrical run by earning around Rs 10 crore in Hindi.
Before Marco, there were several films like Kantara, Pushpa and Karthikeya 2, which opened to low numbers but ended their theatrical innings by collecting a huge figure in the North Belt.
Rishabh Shetty starrer Kantara took an opening of Rs 1.25 crore in Hindi and went on to collect a massive Rs 80 crore, resulting in a huge blockbuster at the box office. The film became a pan-India sensation due to which the makers decided to capitalize on it and bring out a prequel. Kantara Chapter 1 is set to release on screens this year. It will be interesting to see how it performs at the Hindi box office.
Karthikeya 2 starring Nikhil Siddharth and Anupama Parameswaran won the hearts of the audience with its mythological plot and engaging story. The film started with just Rs 7 lakh, but made a huge business of Rs 25 crore in the Hindi dubbed version.
Last but not the least, Pushpa Part 1: The Rise created history in 2021. Starting its journey with just Rs 3 crore in the northern circuit, the Allu Arjun and Rashmika Mandanna starrer went on to become a blockbuster by earning over Rs 100 crore. In Hindi markets. This mass action film was such a big hit that the makers were forced to take the story forward with a sequel. And the rest is history!
Pushpa 2 is still making waves at the box office and is expected to end its theatrical run with a collection of around Rs 750 crore at the Hindi box office. It has already become the number 1 film in the Hindi language, beating Stree 2 and Jawan.
