The box office performance of a film depends not only on its quality but also on many other factors, such as star cast, release date, pre-release buzz and promotion. Many films that received positive responses failed at the box office. Pinkvilla compiled a list of 5 films which flopped at the box office despite getting good reviews. To keep an eye!
1. Tamasha
Tamasha is counted among the modern cult films. However, very few people know that this film directed by Imtiaz Ali did not perform well at the box office.
Made on a budget of Rs 87 crore, Tamasha flopped with its entire collection earning Rs 68.50 crore. Although reviews were positive, the Ranbir Kapoor-Deepika Padukone film did not achieve the expected viewership.
2. Robber
Directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, Lootera holds a special place among cinema lovers. However, despite receiving good reviews, it bombed at the box office.
The Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha starrer film could collect only Rs 27.75 crore against the estimated budget of Rs 32 crore.
3. An action hero
Starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Jaideep Ahlawat in the lead roles, An Action Hero received positive reviews, but was not a box office success. Directed by Anirudh Iyer, the film proved to be a poor performer.
4. Jersey
Shahid Kapoor and Mrunal Thakur starrer sports-drama Jersey won the audience’s love but was not a commercial success. Directed by Gautham Tinnanuri, the film did not have a successful theatrical run and was a disappointment despite receiving praise for its performances.
Made on a huge budget of Rs 95 crore, Jersey could only collect Rs 20.50 crore in India and flopped badly at the box office.
5. Gangs of Wasseypur 2
Gangs of Wasseypur is considered one of the best films of Indian cinema. However, the two-part gangster drama was not a successful venture at the box office.
This cult film directed by Anurag Kashyap could not attract much audience to the theatres. A major reason for its failure was the release of Salman Khan’s Ek Tha Tiger just a week after its release.
