Border 2 has started taking off in India, and the initial response has been expectedly strong. While ticket sales officially began this morning, many centers began preparations by making tickets available late last night. At the time of writing, the Sunny Deol-led War film featuring Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh and Ahan Shetty has sold around 10,000 tickets across national chains (PVRINOX and Cinepolis) on the opening day. Meanwhile, ticket booking platform BookMyShow is reporting around 20,000 tickets sold so far.
These are fantastic opening figures and clearly underline the sense of urgency among the audience. Border 2 is a film that’s expected to build strong momentum near release and will see progress pick up in the final days, making these early figures particularly encouraging. The film will aim to sell around 250K tickets in the national chains, which it can achieve from this opening. Although this may not seem like a big number compared to some other big films that have clocked over 400-500K tickets there, Border 2 is expected to have strong sales elsewhere, in non-national chains and single screens.
For the record, Gadar 2 had sold 274K tickets across the national chains for its opening day.
Border 2 is expected to have a big opening, with Pinkvilla predicts around Rs. 40 crores. It’s always encouraging when progress meets expectations, as they serve as the first real indicator of a film’s box office performance. Earlier yesterday, it was reported how overseas markets had made a strong start to the gains, and now India has also mirrored the same trend. The focus now is on getting the reception right and building on this start. Monday is a big national holiday for Republic Day, which should have a big impact on this patriotic-themed film.
Last year was a mixed bag for the Hindi film industry, but it ended on a strong note with the record-breaking earnings of Dhurandhar. With Borderlands 2, 2026 is set to carry that momentum forward, with many more major releases scheduled throughout the year.
