The Bombay High Court has issued an important order to protect the personality rights of Shilpa Shetty and address the online misuse of her identity. His lawyer says the verdict sends a strong message about deepfakes and digital impersonation.

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday issued an order protecting the personality rights of actress Shilpa Shetty. An official statement from the actor’s team confirmed the development, emphasizing restraint against using or misrepresenting his name, image, voice, likeness or personality in any manner. The court also directed that the defamatory and infringing content circulated on various platforms be immediately removed.

The order further reinforces that the identity and reputation of a public figure cannot be commercially exploited or digitally misused without consent.

Official statement from Shilpa’s lawyer Sana Raees Khan:

“The Bombay High Court has made it very clear in the personality rights case of Ms. Shilpa Shetty that the Internet cannot become a playground for deepfakes and digital impersonation. The Court has protected her personality rights and acknowledged that her name, image, voice and personality are valuable legal rights that cannot be commercially exploited or digitally manipulated without her consent. This order reinforces that digital platforms and intermediaries must act expeditiously to remove such content.” and prevent misuse of technology that violates their dignity and respect.”

In November 2025, Shetty moved the Bombay High Court seeking protection of his personality rights. Her lawyer Sana Raees Khan had said, “The misuse of Ms. Shilpa Shetty’s name, image and identity has reached a point where legal intervention has become necessary.”

Khan said, “His personality is the result of decades of credibility, discipline and public trust. No platform has the right to weaponize his identity for ulterior commercial gains. Our lawsuit before the Bombay High Court signals zero tolerance towards rampant abuse of celebrity rights.”

earlier this year, Director-producer Karan Johar seeks intervention from Delhi High Court To protect his personality rights. The petition comes following allegations that Johar’s name was being used to extort money following similar cases involving Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan.

Actors Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff and Hrithik Roshan, among others, had also approached the court in the past seeking protection of their personality rights.
