Over the past few years, boAt has successfully established itself as a value-for-money audio brand. The company offers affordable audio devices with good sound quality. The latest addition to this collection is the boAt Stone Lumos speaker, which comes with LED projection. I used this device for a few weeks and found it to be one of the best speakers under Rs 10,000. Why is that so? Let’s find out in this review.

Portable speaker with LED projection gives a cinematic feel

The Boat Stone Lumos attracts attention not just because of its sound but also because of its design. The first thing you will notice is its sturdy and somewhat robust build, which is a sign of durability. Weighing 2kg, this speaker is not the lightest speaker, but it is sturdy enough to feel solid without being too heavy.

Clad in a solid matte-finish exterior, the speaker feels premium in the hand, while the cylindrical shape with sturdy mesh grille offers a good grip and portability experience. The handle on the top of the speaker enhances its portability, allowing you to easily carry it around or even hang it on a hook. The speaker is IPX4-rated, which protects it from sweat and splashes. Support for an IP68 water-resistant rating would have been better, but the IPX4 rating is not bad. You can use the speaker poolside or on a hiking trip without worrying about any damage.

The control buttons are placed on the top, with a rubber finish that not only feels sturdy but also makes it easy to use even if the speaker gets wet. boAt has provided all the essential buttons including play/pause, volume, power off, and more. The ports including USB-C, USB Type-A port, and 3.5mm AUX input are protected by a good quality flap, which contributes to making it water resistant.

The most interesting thing about this speaker is the LED projection. You might be wondering if it will project videos or images on a plain wall. It does not. The LED is meant to spread light throughout your room and give it a dreamy look while watching movies at night.

I watched a Marvel movie using this speaker, and it delivered a cinematic experience. The sound quality is solid and the dynamic lighting effects make intense scenes entertaining by syncing with the dialogue and on-screen events. This feature adds a whole new layer of excitement to binge-watching, making it more engaging and fun. The speaker can easily fill a small or medium-sized room. We will talk about the sound part in a while.

The boAt Stone Lumos can also be customized via the boAt Hearables app, where you can choose different light themes or effects to suit your mood. However, the options are somewhat limited, and it would be even better if the company expanded the selection to improve the overall experience.

Sound quality is what impresses the most in its price range

Given the budget price range, the boAt Stone Lumos also impresses in terms of sound quality. I got a balanced audio experience that punches well above its weight. Equipped with 2 front drivers and a passive radiator for bass, the speaker offers a total output of 60W, which is more than enough to fill a medium-sized room, but it’s not the best for large outdoor gatherings.

Indoors, it offers bass-heavy sound output with good depth in the low frequencies. The speaker rarely overpowers the bass over the mids. But I can say that the vocals are mostly clear, and the treble is crisp without being harsh and at higher volumes, there is minimal distortion. Bollywood songs, a little EDM and pop music will be fun to listen to. A good music experience also goes to the 360-degree sound distribution that ensures that wherever you place the speaker, the sound is consistent throughout the space.

Other than that, I did not face any pairing issues with this speaker. It is very easy to connect it to the smartphone instantly. The good thing about this Bluetooth speaker is that it automatically turns off after some time when it detects that the device is not being used. This helps in saving battery, but sometimes it becomes annoying as I have to turn it on again and again whenever I feel like using the speaker after a few hours in the day. It is worth noting that the device connects easily to multiple devices once paired, although the speaker does not always connect (automatically) and I had to go into the Bluetooth settings to pair.

Battery life is good

It packs a 800mAh battery that boAt claims can deliver up to 9 hours of continuous playback. In real-world usage, the speaker lasts for about 4-5 hours on a single charge at 60 percent volume level and the LED feature disabled. However, the device drains the battery quickly when the LED feature is used. It lasts for 1 to 2 hours depending on the volume setting. So, I had to keep the speaker plugged into a socket so that I could use it for hours. But keep in mind that your results will vary depending on the volume level and whether you are using it via Bluetooth or aux input. Charging the speaker using the USB-C port takes less than 45 minutes. Overall, the battery life of the boAt Stone Lumos is reliable.

Boat Stone Lumos LED Projection review: Is it worth buying?

Yes, it is worth buying. The boAt Stone Lumos is priced at Rs 6,999 and is a great portable speaker. It combines rugged durability with premium design and delivers good sound for bass lovers. It also has an IPX4 splash-resistant rating, and good battery life makes it a reliable companion. The LED projection feature, which is also its specialty, is great for a good binge-watching experience. It is also worth noting that Flipkart is currently offering some bank discounts on this speaker, so people will be able to buy it at a slightly lower price.
