Tamil drama ‘Kantha’, which released in theaters on November 14, stars Dulquer Salmaan, Bhagyashree Borse and Rana Daggubati in lead roles. The film has received positive reviews and continues to perform well at the box office. In a recent interview, director Selvamani Selvaraj and actor Bhagyashree Borse provided insight into the production process, focusing on some of the behind-the-scenes challenges.

During an interview with Sudhir Srinivasan, Bhagyashree Borse addressed her reluctance to perform a particular scene involving physical action. He said, “Bhagyashree said that she was hesitant to do a scene in which her character slaps Dulquer’s character.” This moment required careful coordination between the actors and the director to meet the demands of the story.

Elaborating on her apprehension, Bhagyashree shared, “Obviously behind the scenes, I was a little hesitant to do it, but I think he (Dulquer) wanted that perfection. We really went for it, and he was willing to go through that to get out that performance and I respect that. But I was really hesitant. This is the first time I’ve done that.” His comments underline the artistes’ commitment to achieving authenticity in their performances.

Director Selvamani Selvaraj commented after filming the scene, “Selvamani said that after the scene, Dulquer’s face turned red.” The director’s observation highlights the level of realism expected during shooting as well as the physical demands placed on the actors for the film’s story.

Set in 1950s Madras, ‘Kantha’ follows the story of superstar TK Mahadevan, played by Dulquer Salmaan, as he works on a film described as Tamil’s first horror film ‘Kantha’. Along with Salman, the cast includes Samuthirakani, Bhagyashree Borse, Rana Daggubati and Ravindra Vijay, each of whom contributes to the period atmosphere of the film.

Bhagyashree Borse plays the role of Kumari, an up-and-coming actress, in the film, while Rana Daggubati plays the role of Inspector Phoenix. The central plot explores the battle of egos between Mahadevan and his former mentor, filmmaker Ayya (played by Samuthirakani), leading to unexpected consequences for those around him.

The film was directed by Selvamani Selvaraj and produced by Dulquer Salmaan and Rana Daggubati under the banner of Wayfarer Films and Spirit Media. The release has received favorable response from audiences, reflecting the continued interest in period dramas and the efforts of the cast and crew.

The box office performance of ‘Kantha’ has remained steady, and critical appreciation focuses on the dedication of its actors and filmmakers in bringing to the screen a complex narrative supported by remarkable performances and attention to historical detail.
