A senior female hairdresser from the Bengali film industry tried to commit suicide by writing an explosive note making serious allegations of harassment against the Hairdressers Guild. She wrote this note on the night of September 21, in which she named 11 members of the Hairdressers Guild. A written complaint has been lodged at the Haridevpur police station.
,trigger warning) The hairdresser was rescued by her daughter and taken to MR Bangur Hospital in Tollygunge. She also poured kerosene oil on her.
The veteran hairdresser alleged that on May 1, the guild suspended her for three months. The reason behind her suspension is not clear from the note. A source told India Today Digital, “She had raised her voice for a long time demanding free, fair and impartial elections in the Hairdressers Guild. She became the political target of the officials and was being harassed in every way. She was initially suspended for three months, but when her suspension was over, she was repeatedly obstructed in her work in different ways. She was not being allowed to do good work in the industry.”
The senior hairdresser has written in her note, “I was suspended for three months from May 1, but even after that I was not allowed to work properly. I was not able to fulfill my family responsibilities properly, so I am forced to commit suicide. The committee members of my guild are responsible for this.” She has also written the names of 11 members of the guild in the same note.
A source said that the hairdressers also approached TMC leader and Federation of Cine Technician Workers of Eastern India (FCTWEI) president Swarup Biswas for a solution but got no relief. India Today Digital called and messaged federation president Swarup Biswas for his response but he did not respond.
Another source from the Bengali film industry told India Today Digital that the veteran hairdresser had somehow managed to get work in a Bengali film. But, on Saturday, September 21, she suddenly got a call from the production team informing her that she has been removed from the team. This forced her to take this big decision.
A written complaint has been filed against the guild members at the Haridevpur police station. Kolkata Police DCP (south-west division) Rahul Dey told India Today Digital, “We received the complaint around 9 pm. She was immediately rushed to the hospital along with her daughter in the car of our additional officer in charge of the police station for treatment. An investigation is underway. Appropriate action will be taken after the investigation report.”
A Kolkata Police source told India Today Digital, “The complaint letter we received contains allegations against the guild members and the committee. The complaint was initially lodged at the Haridevpur police station but has been transferred to the Regent Park police station for further investigation as the incident spot (guild office) falls under the jurisdiction of the Regent Park area, where the guild office is located.”
Bengali actress Sudipta Chakraborty protested against this incident. She highlighted the incident by posting about it on social media. Sudipta Chakraborty told India Today Digital, “Yesterday evening I got a message from his number. He messaged me asking for help. But unfortunately I was in class. So I couldn’t respond on time. I am unable to forgive myself. An example of how far workplace harassment can go is right now in front of my eyes. I will see an end to this, I promise.”
The hairdresser is still undergoing treatment.
