Ben Affleck had just arrived in Los Angeles after dropping his daughter Violet to school when news of Jennifer Lopez’s divorce broke. As TMZ reports, Lopez filed for divorce from Affleck in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Tuesday, August 20. The Atlas actress listed the date of separation as August 26, 2024. She filed the papers on her own without a lawyer.
Tuesday also marked the couple’s second anniversary of their traditional wedding in Georgia. They fled to Las Vegas to get married in July.
According to People, shortly before Lopez’s filing, Affleck was spotted returning with Garner to the West Coast city where they took their eldest daughter Violet, 18, to college at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. After getting off the plane, the former couple got into a car and left together, according to the publication.
On Monday, August 19, a source told People that Affleck is “very focused on getting Violet ready to live at home” amid his and Lopez’s marital issues. “Of course, this is a huge deal for the family, and they have all been very excited over the last couple of weeks,” the insider added.

A few days ago, on August 15, the Oscar winner celebrated her 52nd birthday with her kids so she could spend quality time with them before school reopened after summer break. Lopez also stopped by their rental home in Brentwood, California to congratulate them.
Another source told People that Affleck’s birthday went exactly as he wanted it. His kids reportedly packed him gifts and the occasion was a family affair. The insider added: “The kids stayed with Ben all day. He didn’t leave the house on his birthday.”
Affleck and Garner, whose marriage ended in 2018, also have children Seraphina, 15, and Samuel, 12.
