Apple is rumored to be working on a foldable iPhone, which is expected to launch in early 2026. Now, reports have emerged that Samsung may be working on a new foldable device, which could be a direct rival to the alleged iPhone Fold. Here’s what we know.

Samsung is probably working on a direct rival to the iPhone Fold

According to Korean outlet ET News, the new Samsung foldable, internally called the Wide Fold, will be completely different from Samsung’s existing foldable offerings, which include the Z Fold and Z Flip lineup. According to the report, the form factor of this foldable can be like Apple’s foldable iPhone.

The Samsung Wide Fold is expected to have a 7.6-inch internal screen when opened and a 5.4-inch external display when closed. Both displays will likely be OLED panels. The internal display is said to have a 4:3 aspect ratio, which is wider and squarer than the tall, narrow displays found on existing Galaxy Z Fold phones.

The “passport-like” format of the Samsung Wide Fold suggests a wider and squarer panel that could make activities like reading, document editing, and viewing photos more natural, while reducing the need for apps to be awkwardly spread out across the screen. Interestingly, this isn’t too far off from the reported dimensions of the iPhone Fold, which could come with a 7.8-inch internal display and a 5.5-inch external screen.

However, the reason behind both the companies working on this form factor is not yet clear. Google and Oppo have launched foldable smartphones with similar form factors in the past, but have since switched to more traditional formats.

Samsung’s Wide Fold can be launched along with the iPhone Fold

According to the report, Samsung is planning a Fall 2026 release for the Wide Fold, putting it in direct competition against the foldable iPhone, which is expected to launch in September 2026. However, the exact dates of both launches have not been confirmed.

Unfortunately, there is no other information available yet regarding the Samsung Wide Fold. The device will further expand the Korean giant’s reach in foldables after launching the Galaxy Z Trifold earlier this month.

The price of the Samsung Wide Fold also remains unclear. However, it may be priced similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which was launched in India for Rs 1,74,999. For context, Apple is expected to launch the iPhone Fold in the US for $2,400 (roughly Rs. 2,15,000).
