Avatar: Fire and Ash pre-sales are gaining momentum in India. The threequel directed by James Cameron has sold nearly 100K tickets across national chains on the first day. If the film doesn’t violate this tonight, it should make it by tomorrow morning’s update. Sales were good over the weekend, with approximately 225K tickets sold.
While these numbers are big, they pale in comparison to Avatar: The Way of Water. At the same point before release, Avatar 2 has sold 230K tickets in national chains for the opening day. Ultimately it ended at 330K tickets. Avatar 3 gained some momentum over the weekend, with final sales of 200K looking likely to be achieved. However, since then, it has not gone that way, and now it is more likely to close around 150-165K tickets, depending on what kind of selection it gets tomorrow.
Avatar 3 was expected to be less than Avatar 2, but not to this extent. In terms of first day sales, the film is trailing this year’s The Conjuring 4, which sold over 225K tickets across national chains. For the weekend, it will be ahead as sales are better spread, but it should also be well ahead on the first day, as Avatar is a big franchise in India, possibly the second biggest after the MCU.
Here is a list of the top Hollywood sales at national chains on the first day after the pandemic:
