Cases of infections often increase as the seasons change. Falling sick not only weakens your physical health, but it can also be quite uncomfortable and tiring. There are many things you can do to boost your immunity and protect yourself from seasonal infections. According to Harvard Health, your first line of defense is to choose a healthy lifestyle. This includes exercising regularly, getting good sleep, reducing stress, and eating a healthy diet. In a recent Instagram reel, cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Sriram Nene shared six superfoods to boost your immunity. Let’s take a look at them.
6 superfoods for your immunity as suggested by Dr. Nene:
1. Turmeric
Everyone knows about turmeric milk or golden latte for good health and immunity. Turmeric contains an active compound called curcumin which has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and immunity-boosting properties. Turmeric is widely used in Indian cooking and you can also drink turmeric milk at bedtime to get good sleep and boost immunity.
2. Red bell pepper
Red bell peppers are a good source of vitamins A and C that help boost immunity and control high blood pressure. Vitamin A is also needed to build important cells that fight infectious diseases. Bell peppers are also rich in vitamin B6 and folate that help reduce homocysteine levels, ensuring heart health.
3. Ginger
Adding some grated ginger to your tea is an age-old home remedy for boosting immunity. According to the book ‘Healing Foods’ by D.K., “The volatile oils found in ginger have anti-inflammatory properties similar to NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), making it an excellent remedy for flu, headaches and menstrual pain. It can also reduce medication intake in osteoarthritis.”
