Renowned nutritionist Amita Gadre has shared a video on her Instagram handle (@amitagadre) debunking the popular myth about various biscuits being healthy. She has also suggested some healthy alternatives instead.

No, biscuits are not considered healthy
Nutritionist Amita Gadre says that biscuits, though eaten with tea, are not as healthy as people think.
1. Poor nutritional profile
Most biscuits are high in fat and refined flour, and contain little or no fibre. This means they provide only “empty calories”, i.e. energy and very little other nutrients such as protein, vitamins or minerals.
2. Not all biscuits are the same
Despite claims of being zero fat, sugar-free, flour-free or diabetic-friendly, these special biscuits often offer nothing but empty calories.
How does a low nutrient diet affect our body?
According to Gadre, constantly consuming food that lacks adequate nutrition means missing out on nourishing your body. She also points out that most biscuits, including rusks, khari, nankhatai and jeera biscuits, are made from refined wheat flour (maida), which lacks fibre. Lack of fibre can lead to constipation in both children and adults.
Healthy options at tea time
Since Gadre doesn’t recommend biscuits at regular tea time, you might be wondering what to have with tea. She suggests not eating anything with tea if you’re not hungry. However, if you need a snack, consider healthy options like makhana, low-oil chivda, methi thepla, vegetable rolls or a piece of fruit. The key here is to eat these foods only 15 minutes after drinking tea, as their nutrients can affect the absorption of iron in the body.
Can you enjoy biscuits sometimes?
Nutritionist Amita Gadre says that you don’t have to completely eliminate biscuits from your life. You can have a cream biscuit or your favourite type of biscuit occasionally. However, she suggests not making it a habit, as it can affect your overall health.
