Apple is reportedly working on significant upgrades to its product line as it develops next-generation products like foldable iPhones, Macs, and more. And, according to a report from Bloomberg, central to all these plans is a new modem that Apple is developing.

This modem, once ready, is likely to replace the Qualcomm modem that the company currently uses in the iPhone. The new modem could enable Apple to explore new form factors and designs for the iPhone, including slimmer chassis and foldables. This also allows Apple to put cellular modems in MacBooks, which will allow them to connect not only to WiFi but also to 5G cellular networks.

Apple’s new modem, codenamed “Sinop,” will arrive in 2025, according to a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The component is reportedly smaller and more power-efficient than Qualcomm’s chips, allowing Apple to create more compact device designs. Gurman says this next-generation modem will first appear in the iPhone SE — expected to launch in early 2025 — followed by a thinner handset, codenamed “D23,” later that year.

Due to the streamlined design enabled by the Sinop modem, the D23 model is expected to be the thinnest iPhone ever. Reportedly, by reducing the size of internal components, Apple aims to incorporate features like larger batteries and advanced camera systems while keeping the devices sleek and thin.

Gurman’s report also sheds light on Apple’s plans to introduce a foldable iPhone as part of its future lineup. Although no official timeline has been confirmed, the compact design facilitated by the new modem could support the development of foldable devices. If these reports are accurate, Apple’s entry into the foldable phone market would mark entry into a product category that is currently dominated by other major brands.

In addition to iPhones, Apple is also said to be considering adding cellular capabilities to its Mac lineup for the first time. This upgrade will allow users to access the internet without relying on Wi-Fi networks. However, Gurman suggests that cellular-enabled Macs are unlikely to arrive before 2026, as the company plans to implement a second-generation modem with better speeds and efficiency for this purpose.

The move will expand cellular connectivity beyond iPhones, iPads and Apple Watches, expanding the scope of devices that can operate independently of Wi-Fi.

The modem technology is also being evaluated for use in Apple’s headsets, including future versions of the Vision Pro. Lightweight augmented reality glasses, a concept Apple is exploring, could also benefit from this connectivity.

Additionally, Apple plans to introduce modems in low-end iPads starting next year, with Pro models expected to adopt the technology in 2026. Currently, no plans have been disclosed to integrate a modem into Apple Watch models.
