There is a lot of discussion about the upcoming iPhone 17 series. Previous leaks had indicated that the new series will bring various software and hardware upgrades, including a 120Hz refresh rate, A19 chipset, and camera improvements. Additionally, the iPhone 17 Air variant has been in the news even before the launch of the latest iPhone 16 series. The Air model is speculated to follow in the footsteps of the iPad Air and Mac Air and is expected to be the thinnest iPhone ever. According to reports, the thickness of iPhone 17 Air will be 6mm, which will be thinner than the 6.9mm thickness of iPhone 6. And now, the latest rumor is that it’s not just the iPhone 17 Air that’s getting a facelift, but the entire series will be sporting a new avatar. A new leak suggests that Apple is planning to return to the aluminum design of last years, moving away from the titanium material introduced with the iPhone 15 Pro models.
iPhone 17 series: leaked design
According to the report, Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models are set to undergo a significant design overhaul, taking inspiration from the upcoming iPhone 17 Air. While aluminum is currently reserved for standard iPhone models, with the Pro versions using stainless steel and titanium, the iPhone 17 Pro lineup is rumored to bring back aluminum frames.
The Pro model will reportedly have a dual-material back – aluminum on the top and a glass panel on the bottom. This glass inclusion is necessary to maintain wireless charging capabilities, though specific details regarding the aluminum-to-glass ratio are unclear. A few days before this leak, a reliable tipster had hinted at the new design of the upcoming iPhones.
Not just the body material, the report suggests that the camera arrangement may also change for the entire series. Interestingly, the camera bump will be larger and crafted from aluminium, as opposed to the glass design seen on the existing Pro models. Apple last used aluminum for its premium devices before the iPhone This redesign is seen to be similar to the camera bump of the Google Pixel 9 series. Since the leak surfaced, some X users have been comparing the two.
There is speculation that the Pro models may adopt the slim profile of the iPhone 17 Air, although further details regarding thickness have not been revealed yet. This potential redesign suggests a significant change in Apple’s approach, as it balances aesthetics, functionality, and marketing appeal.
As far as design is concerned, the iPhone 17 Pro is also expected to combine the functions of the action button and volume buttons. This design decision is also practical, especially if Apple introduces action buttons to all four iPhone 17 models. By reducing the number of physical buttons, Apple can ensure that the thinner models still meet the durability standards of current iPhones.
