Apple is allegedly discovering the use of Tandem OLED panels for its iPhone lineup, with the expectation of upgrade around 2028. This development comes as the LG display, one of the major suppliers of Apple, this technique is carrying forward aggressively and is said in advanced talks with the company.
Tandem OLED panels are designed separately from the currently used single-layer OLED screen in iPhones. The structure uses two organic light-esitory layers standing above each other, which helps to enhance shine, reduces power consumption and increases the life of performance. Apple has already adopted this technique in its M4 iPad Pro model, where LG provided most panels, while Samsung supplied the rest.
Reports suggest that Apple has been considering this change over the years, and the LG display has played a major role in promoting the idea. The supplier keeps more than 300 patents in Tendem OLED technology, leading it to lead in the region. To deal with potential manufacturing barriers (since stacking two emission layers can slow down production), LG is also preparing new investment to expand its production capacity.
There are also indications that Apple is not only evaluating the standard leading structures, but also a “simplified” version. In this approach, the blue sub-pixel uses a two-layer design, while red and green continue with a single layer, which can make production more efficient without losing the benefits of durability and brightness.
Other smartphone manufacturers have already experimented in small versions with the Agranukram OLED. For example, honor, using the panels of sown for your magic 6 porsche design version in 2023, showing that technology is viable in commercial equipment.
If Apple adopts Tandem OLED for its iphones, it is unlikely to depend on a supplier. Industry experts believe that Samsung and BOE can also be brought with LG displays to ensure adequate supply and maintain cost. However, since the reported timeline is still three years away, Apple’s plans depend on how technology and production scenario develops. For now, all signals point to Apple, which prepare to bring bright, more efficient displays to their smartphones in the second half of this decade, possibly setting a new standard for the iPhone screen.
