Meta and Apple are reportedly in talks to bring Meta AI to iPhones

Earlier this month at WWDC 2024, Apple officially made its big move to keep up with the growing trend of AI – it announced Apple Intelligence. Apple also announced its partnership with OpenAI to offer ChatGPT on iPhones. Reports suggest that Apple is now in talks with Meta to bring Meta AI to iPhones. Meanwhile, there are also reports that Apple is also in discussions with Anthropic and Perplexity to bring their AI chatbots to iPhones, according to a report by WSJ. This is what Craig Federighi said at WWDC 2024. “We’re starting with the best of these external models”, which, according to Apple, is OpenAI. Federighi promised that more AI external models would be added to iPhones, and it seems like the company is preparing to deliver on that promise.

For those who don’t know — and there’s quite a bit of confusion about this — all of the models announced at WWDC are built from scratch by Apple. The local model is a small language model with 3 billion parameters, customized for each specific feature using adapters. The spread models work similarly. Any model running locally or on the Apple Cloud is an Apple-designed model. Apple’s AI models, like others, are trained on extensive data sets. However, if a query is particularly complex or involves extensive real-world data not included in Apple’s training, users will be directed to use a third-party AI chatbot like ChatGPT. In the future, this could potentially include meta AI or the cloud.

It seems that iPhone users will be able to use Apple’s own AI models to use generative AI features on the device like Maths in Notes or Rewrite, but only if users need AI beyond that. With the new alleged partnerships, iPhone users will be able to access various AI tools. This will not only give users a choice but also give them a chance to explore different bots with different expertise. Notably, Apple is reportedly still in talks with Google to bring Gemini to iPhones. This was something that was reported even before the WWDC 2024 launch.

While the integration of multiple AI chatbots will provide more options for Apple users, it will also be beneficial for brands like Meta, Perplexity, and Anthropic, who will be able to benefit from Apple’s huge distribution through the iPhone.

At the launch at WWDC 2024, Apple announced that Apple Intelligence will be available on the new iPhones launching in September this year. But out of the existing models, it will only be available on the top-end iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Many feel that Apple is restricting the features to limited models to boost sales of the upcoming phones, but Apple says it has a solid reason behind doing so.

Apple Intelligence is not a standalone app or chatbot like ChatGPT. Instead, it is an integrated AI layer within the operating system, which enhances various functions. It will introduce features like an all-new Siri, AI-assisted writing tool, real-time call transcripts, and custom emojis, which demand high processing power and memory, making them available only on the latest hardware. The company says that it does not want to give people a poor experience. They would rather not roll out features on a few devices and give them a half-baked experience.

Meanwhile, Google has also started rolling out Meta AI for WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook users in India. Like other AI assistants, Meta AI can manage daily tasks such as writing emails, summarizing text, and translating. Although its availability was announced on Monday, it appears to be rolling out slowly. Last week, Google also launched the Gemini app and Gemini Advanced in India. The app is now available on the Google Play Store with support for nine Indian languages including Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu.
