Anurag Kashyap says he didn’t dare to meet Ranbir-Anushka after Bombay Velvet flopped
Anurag Kashyap reveals how the box office failure of ‘Bombay Velvet’ (2015) affected his relationship with Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma. He told that after the film flopped, he did not try to meet the lead actors.

Director Anurag Kashyap remembers his 2015 neo-noir period film Bombay Velvet His relationships with Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma became strained. He told that after the film flopped, he gathered the courage not to meet Ranbir and Anushka.
Anurag, in an interview with Indian Expressrevealed that Ranbir often gets upset whenever the film comes to the media. She said, “I think Ranbir was very upset about it and he keeps saying, ‘Why do you keep talking about this Bombay VelvetJust ignore it. The film didn’t work, it didn’t work, but you don’t need to talk about it all the time. But people ask me questions all the time, how can I ignore this,”
The 53-year-old actor also stressed the impact of the film’s failure on his relationship with the lead actors. “We don’t meet often. Whenever we meet, we just hug and greet each other. And initially, I didn’t know how to face him because he had given me so much trust and love. And I was dealing with my own demons. So I needed to come out of that and make a very short film. My focus was on Raman Raghav. But gradually, I think, we drifted apart,” said the director.
Revealing what conclusions the studio research team came to after the box office failure Bombay VelvetHe asserted, “The failure of the film was such that when they did the research, the shocking thing was that people did not like Ranbir’s hair. He said that the audience became upset with Ranbir’s hair because he kept it curly. And it was a choice we all made, we designed it that way. And when I heard this, I was like, this is the most absurd reason I can hear. One might say, ‘Oh, the film is my ‘It doesn’t work’, but to come and say that the hair didn’t work, and that’s why it didn’t take off and people didn’t go see the movie because they were bothered by the hair, that was ridiculous.”
Anurag has recently directed a crime-drama sniperIn which Aishwarya Thackeray, Vedika Pinto and Monica Panwar are in lead roles. The film was released theatrically on September 19, 2025.
Director’s crime-thriller MonkeyStarring Bobby Deol and Sanya Malhotra, it is expected to release in 2026.
