While promoting Captain America: Brave New World during San Diego Comic-Con, Anthony Mackie hit back at Tom Holland’s jibe that Falcon doesn’t have his own solo Marvel movie. Steve Rogers’ most trusted ally during the then-Star-Spangled Avenger’s darkest moments was Mackie’s Sam Wilson, who debuted as Falcon in Joe and Anthony Russo’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier. During Avengers: Endgame, Steve handed the shield over to Sam, essentially making him the new Captain America, and though it’s taken a while, Mackie will direct his first Captain America movie.
Will Mackie’s Captain America and Holland’s Spider-Man ever share the screen?
According to the report, Mackie finally hit back at Holland’s sarcasm about not having his own solo movie during Marvel Studios’ Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con. In light of Mackie’s upcoming big screen debut as Captain America, Holland joked about Mackie not having a solo movie at 2018’s ACE Comic Con, when the actor was still Falcon in the MCU.
After The Falcon and the Winter Soldier on Disney+, Mackie will return to the MCU in Captain America: Brave New World. Unlike Bucky Barnes, Sebastian Stan’s character won’t be assisting him this time around. Given the franchise’s inclination towards multi-year plans, Sam is certain to return for future projects, including the recently revised Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, both directed by the Russo’s. Mackie could appear for a short crossover in another upcoming MCU project, but special event films could also reunite Sam with Peter Parker.
Shocking revelations about the next Avengers films and cast
Although Sam’s taking over the role of Captain America has been made pretty public, his new role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t been explicitly acknowledged. Holland’s Peter won’t even recognize him when they meet again after Spider-Man: No Way Home. Having said that, it would be nice if Marvel Studios could address this fun back-and-forth by making a meta-comment about their roles in the franchise. Plus, if they become official Avengers, they’d make a great team, especially if they become members of the team.
The next Avengers films, Doomsday and Secret Wars, will come out a few years from now. There’s also been a surprise casting announcement regarding Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. RDJ posted a photo of himself in front of Doctor Doom’s mask on Instagram and captioned the photo, “New mask, same job.” Before that, it would be great to see Holland respond to Mackie’s comments about Sam not having his own movie, especially since Holland’s Spider-Man 4 is still in early development. If Marvel Studios wants to take advantage of this playful back-and-forth, Holland could even attend next year’s Captain America: Brave New World premiere.
