An Indian woman was killed and another woman was seriously injured when a 19-year-old Indian-origin man shot her outside a residential building in Carteret, New Jersey. Gaurav Gill, a resident of Kent, Washington, has been arrested for the murder of 29-year-old Jasvir Kaur.

Jasveer Kaur died in the hospital, while the other victim, Gagandeep Kaur, 20, is in critical condition at University Hospital Newark.

According to CBS News, the shooting happened on Wednesday morning, and the attacker was captured just hours after the crime.

According to Times of India, the accused Gaurav Gill and the injured woman Gagandeep Kaur knew each other and studied together at an IELTS coaching centre in Punjab’s Nakodar town.

Jasbir Kaur, who was killed, was a resident of Gorsian near Nurmahal in Punjab and was hosting her cousin Gagandeep at her home when the incident took place on Wednesday morning.

Jasveer Kaur worked at Amazon’s factory in Carteret, New Jersey. According to News12 New Jersey, her husband, a truck driver, was out of town at the time of the incident.

Jasbir and Gagandeep’s parents are small farmers. Jasbir’s father Kewal Singh said that his daughter and her husband supported her a lot. According to the Times of India, she moved to the US about five years ago.

Gagandeep had gone to the US on a study visa. Recently she told Jasbir about the problems she was facing in her studies.

“Our daughter kept him in her house and helped him in every way possible. Jasbir was sleeping at the time of the incident. Gagandeep had a fight with the accused outside the house and called Jasbir for help. When Jasbir intervened, the accused fired seven bullets in his face, killing him,” Kewal told The Times of India.

Gagandeep and Gill reached America almost at the same time.

Gagandeep’s mother Surjit Kaur said that she did not know Gaurav and was not even aware if he had any dispute with her daughter.

Being a small farmer, her husband also drove a school bus to run the household and managed to send Gagandeep to the US on a study visa.

According to Times of India report, Gill’s father Charan lives in Muscat and his mother was admitted to the hospital two days ago after learning about the incident.

Gill faces multiple charges, including one count of first-degree murder, two counts of second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, one count of second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, one count of fourth-degree possession of a high-capacity magazine, and one count of first-degree attempted murder.

Gill appeared before a judge in Middlesex County Court on Thursday. According to News12 New Jersey, his first court appearance was brief, taking place at the Middlesex County Jail before Judge Gary Price.

Authorities have not given a motive for the shooting or clarified any connection between Gill and the victims.

Gill is due back in court on Tuesday for a custody hearing.
