The Malayalam film ‘L2: Empuran’ set a remarkable box office benchmark in its early day. The film, which stars Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran, is the second part in the ‘Lucifer’ franchise. On its release on 27 March, the film broke several current records and set new sets for the Malayalam film industry. Here is the list:
1. The biggest opening for a Malayalam film worldwide:
Political action has made the biggest debut for the Malayalam film worldwide. ‘L2: Emapuran’ earned a brilliant figure of more than Rs 65 crore, and crossed Mohanlal’s ‘Markar: Lion of the Arabian Sea’ at the global box office. The latter inaugurated Rs 20 crore worldwide and remained the largest Malayalam opener worldwide for more than three years.
2. The biggest opener in Kerala:
‘L2: Empuran’ has also emerged as the biggest opener at the box office in Kerala. It crossed the ‘Leo’ of Thalapathy Vijay, which opened in the state in the gross of Rs 12 crore. Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran-Starr earned around Rs 15 crore in Kerala alone, installing a large milestone for their heritage in the home state.
3. Largest Malayalam inauguration abroad:
Prithviraj Sukumaran is the largest Malayalam opener (international collection) abroad. The film earned Rs 42 crore on its first day internationally, which the Bollywood film earned abroad on its early day.
4. The biggest opening for an Indian film in UK:
As reported by the trade website Sacnilk, ‘L2: Empuran’ alone collected a gross of about Rs 7 crore from the UK market, which is the most open for any Indian film. This means that a Malayalam film has made the biggest debut in the UK, which has crossed all other Indian film industries including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada.
5. The biggest opening weekend for a Malayalam film
While the weekend is not over yet, ‘L2: Empuran’ has already registered the largest initial weekend for the Malayalam film worldwide. The film recorded a gross of Rs 65 crore in its early day, already more than the early weekend collection of ‘aadjukeevitham-the goat life’. The latter, an Prithviraj Sukumaran-Starr, collected a gross of about Rs 64.75 crore in its first weekend worldwide.
While ‘Impuran’ was expected to perform well at the box office, its broad opening-day number is surprising for the business world. The film is not only making records, right and centers, but also placing Malayalam cinema at the forefront of box office games worldwide. It also revived the Malayalam box office this year from single-hand.
The film is expected to cross a benchmark of Rs 50 crore by the end of its first weekend in India.
