Amidst Trump’s tariff threats, India and American inch trade deal close

Amidst the mutual tariff hazards of US President Donald Trump, Indian and US authorities interacted in New Delhi this week to discuss business issues, including reduction in tariffs and reducing non-tariff barriers. Both sides also decided to hold regional talks under the proposed bilateral trade agreement (BTA) in the coming weeks, the Commerce Ministry said on Saturday.

Washington and New Delhi aims to sign the first installment of the bilateral trade deal by Autumn (September-October). He has set a target for more than $ 500 billion trade by more than $ 190 billion from current to 2030.

The conversation held from 26–29 March was led by officials of the Ministry of Commerce of India and was an American trade delegation led by the Assistant American Trade Representative for South and Central Asia Brendon Lynch.

A statement by the Ministry of Commerce of India said, “The successful conclusion of the discussions reflects progress in the efforts to expand the Indo-US bilateral trade and investment relations to promote prosperity, security and innovation in both countries.”

“Sectoral expert-level busyness under BTA will virtually start in the coming weeks and will personally pave the way for an initial interaction,” it said.

Separate, Christopher Landau, Deputy Secretary, US Deputy Secretary, also spoke about the efforts to reduce trade obstacles with Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and to get “fair and balanced bilateral trade relations”, while also strengthened defense and technology cooperation for regional security.

The US State Department said in a statement that Landau thanked India for its efforts to address illegal immigration in the United States.

India-US Tatiff Dialogue

Talks as US President Donald Trump prepares to impose mutual tariffs on several business partners from April 2, in which India expects a discount between bilateral talks. Tariff threatened India, as the US President repeatedly branded New Delhi to “Tariff King” and “Bada Drug” of Business Relations.

The problem is that India’s trade-loving imports-the most in the duties-the world. The US currently has a $ 45.6 billion trade deficit with India. According to the data from the World Trade Organization, the US trade-lo-load tariff rate is about 2.2 percent, India’s average tariff is more than 12 percent.

Washington wants New Delhi to reduce levy on products ranging from agricultural commodities and alcoholic beverages to automobiles, and demand more market access to American companies.

Working in this direction, last month, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Washington, India promised to promote the purchase of American energy products and defense equipment, and both sides agreed to a deal to target bilas of $ 500 billion by 2030. Piyush Goyal, India’s Business Minister also visited Washington for this month’s talks, for talks with US Trade Representative Jam and US Trade Representative Jam.

Trump’s soft trend?

On Friday, US President Donald Trump described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “very smart man” and “my great friend”, while emphasizing that the tariff talks “will work very well between India and our country”.

This comment is important as Trump has repeatedly criticized the high tariffs accused on American goods by India and other countries.

“India is one of the most magnificent countries in the world. It is cruel, it is cruel. He is very smart. He (Modi) is a very smart man and is a great friend of mine. We had a very good conversation. I think it is very well working between India and our country.”
