Movies with a military background, most of the times, evoke strong emotions in one’s heart. Not only this, it is a constant reminder that army personnel are working hard in difficult areas to keep everyone safe. And when the biopic Amaran based on the life of Major Mukund Varadarajan was announced, it piqued everyone’s interest. Expectations skyrocketed when Sivakarthikeyan, who has so far played boy-next-door roles, was chosen to headline the film. For those unaware, Amaran is an adaptation of Shiv Aroor and Rahul Singh’s book series, India’s Most Fearless: True Stories of Modern Military Heroes.
Mukund Varadarajan (Sivakarthikeyan) has set his goals since the fifth grade. A field visit to the Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Chennai sowed the seeds in him to join the Army. Years later, while pursuing graduation at Madras Christian College, he meets his love, Indu Rebecca Varghese (Sai Pallavi). They fall madly in love with each other. For Sindhu, she will also have to love Mukund and his passion.

When Mukund’s duty takes him across the country, he has no option but to hold down the fort for her at home. While he fights a national war, she fights a war with herself. As Mukund was promoted to Major, he became the chief of the 44th Rashtriya Rifles. He performs counter-terrorism duties in Kashmir and formulates a plan to eliminate the heads of a terrorist organization in Kashmir.
Director Rajkumar Periyasamy is in complete control as the writer and director of AmaranAlthough most people already know the ending of the film, its script grabs everyone’s attention. Much of the credit goes to the solid emotional scenes featuring Sivakarthikeyan and Sai Pallavi. With his effortless performance he captivates the audience and makes them cry along with him.
It is refreshing to see the fresh pairing of Sivakarthikeyan and Sai Pallavi, and they carry the film with ease. Amaran’s emotional scenes overshadow the battle scenes, and that may be because everyone knows how the story ends. However, the battle scenes are executed with precision and keep us on the edge of our seats.
Amaran is also a film that highlights the struggles of the families of our army personnel. They are afraid of bad news and still live their life with a smile on their face. The first part of Amaran delves deep into the love story of Mukund and Sindhu, and it brings a smile on your face. The slow building interlude reaches a climax when Mukund kills an important terrorist. This sets the tone for the pulsating second half which focuses on the consequences of the Rashtriya Rifles’ actions.
The film does not glorify heroism and downplays it for the most part. When talking about controversial topics about Kashmir, Rajkumar Periyasamy treats them with utmost dignity and clever writing.
Sivakarthikeyan as Major Mukund Varadarajan shows a never seen before side in Amaran. His demeanor and body language is in line with the role he plays and does complete justice to it. Sai Pallavi as Sindhu feels like a warm embrace on a cold rainy day. Whenever she comes on screen, you can’t help but feel her emotions. Bhuvan Arora, who plays the role of constable Vikram Singh, is another handsome actor in the cast of Amaran. Rahul Bose, Geetha Kailasam, Lallu, Sreekumar and many others have collaborated with the lead cast.
Amran is also strong on the technical front. Composer GV Prakash’s music and background score do an excellent job of enhancing the mood of the film. Cinematographer CH Sai has portrayed the topography of Kashmir wonderfully and the war sequences deserve special mention.
Amaran is a beautiful, emotional and interesting song for Major Mukund Varadarajan And the army men like him. Keep an eye out for emotional scenes throughout the film.
