Robinhood, a trading platform known to focus its focus on retail investors, has revealed that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is playing a huge role in its software development. According to CEO Vlad Tennev, about 50 percent of the new code written in the company is now being generated by AI, Business Insider’s report.
Tenev claimed this during the recent episode of 20VC Podcast. While companies like Google and Microsoft have also started using AI for help with coding, Robinhood seems to be more heavily on it. Google and Microsoft recently said that about 30 percent of their code is AI-generated. However, the number of Robinhoods is very high.
Tenev reported that almost all the engineers of the company now use AI-based code editors. He said that it is difficult to state which parts of the code are written by humans and which are manufactured by AI.
He said, “We have gone from Github Copilot, which is an automatic complete system, for cursor, and now things like Windsurf, where almost all are written by Code AI,” he said. He also mentioned that it is difficult to guess how much code has been really human, but they believe it is now a small part.
This change is not just helping Robinhood write the code faster. This is helping the company to save money and improves how its team works. Tenev said AI had a major impact on departments such as engineering and customer aid. “Its effect on internal teams has been very large,” he said. He also said that the company has been calm about how much AI is using the curtain, but the results have been impressive.
AI’s increasing use of Robinhood occurs at a time when the company is doing well in the market. Since the beginning of the year, the price of its stock has exceeded 170 percent. This growth is powered by several factors, including the company’s push and a prediction market feature for new product rollouts like a prediction market feature in the crypto tokens based on private stock.
While Robinhood is a pioneer in the AI code generation, other large tech firms are also increasing their use of AI. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently said that AI writes up to 30 percent code in some projects. He also stated that the company is using AI to review the code, which is more efficient.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai gave a similar update during the latest income call of alphabet. He said that more than 30 percent of new codes in Google are AI-written, which is above 25 percent a few months ago. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has also said that he hopes that AI will soon handle half of coding in the company, especially for projects such as its Lama model.
Some companies are also changing their hiring plans due to AI. Salesforce CEO Mark Benioff announced earlier this year that the company would stop the new engineering higher in 2025 due to increasing AI growing developer productivity by 30 percent. A payment company Stripe, laid hundreds of workers, including some in engineering, partially due to change towards AI-managed development. Only time will tell whether AI will benefit humans or not.
