AI in iOS 18 might be a privacy concern for some but Apple has a plan

WWDC 2024 is just around the corner and so is the unveiling of iOS 18. The much-awaited iOS 18 is speculated to bring several AI features to the world. While Apple aims to improve user experience with these features, there is no doubt that these are also a cause of several privacy concerns. And the good news is that Apple probably thinks the same. Hence, the tech giant has made plans to tackle these concerns.

According to a new report, the company plans to make iOS 18 AI features not only privacy-conscious, but also opt-in. BloombergApple is expected to offer its new AI features as an opt-in service, people familiar with the matter said.

OpenAI in iOS 18 chatbots

Apple has long been in talks with OpenAI to integrate its chatbot into iOS 18. This raises concerns about whether this could mean that OpenAI will have access to user’s personal information.

Apple saw this concern from the off and planned a different approach. The tech giant has decided that ChatGPT integration with iOS 18 will not be on the default setting. The report assured that Apple will not force this feature on anyone. It will be off by default and users will have to explicitly opt in.

After the iOS 18 integration with OpenAI, Apple will no longer have much control over how the chatbot works. After outsourcing the iOS 18 chatbot, the number of privacy safeguards Apple can build will be less than if they built their own chatbot. Therefore, the move to give control to users makes more sense.

However, other AI features in iOS 18 will be entirely built by Apple and thus users can feel more comfortable about any privacy-related concerns, the company said.

Apple signs deal with OpenAI

According to a recent report, Apple has finally decided to partner with OpenAI to integrate its chatbot, ChatGPT, into the iPhone’s operating system. Apple is expected to announce the deal during its annual event WWDC 2024.

The deal will give ChatGPT-maker access to potentially millions of Apple users, as the chatbot’s capabilities will be integrated with Apple’s applications and services.

WWDC 2024 will start on June 10

WWDC 2024 is set to begin on June 10. The introduction of iOS 18 will open a portal highlighting AI development and Apple’s intentions for AI. The tech giant traditionally reveals annual software and hardware developments, but this time Apple will ignore the hardware part. This could be a big deal with the upcoming iOS 18. Rumors suggest that iOS 18 could be the biggest update to iPhones thanks to AI.

AI is expected to be used a lot in this event, but the tech giant has planned many other features as well. Apart from AI, iOS 18 is likely to introduce many features to improve the user experience. These features include home screen customization options, design changes, changes in Control Center, new Settings app and more.
