After 18 years of unsuccessful attempts, AI helps the couple to get pregnancy
Using the AI-operated Star System of Columbia University, a couple conceived after 18 years of infertility, in which the hidden sperm came to know non-invasively. Success provides new hope for men with azoospermia.

In short
- The couple conceives after 20 years using AI to find hidden sperm
- Non-invasive robotic extraction is used, successful IVF enables pregnancy
- Offer hope amid growing male infertility, cost of method under $ 3,000
A couple achieved pregnancy after almost two decades of unsuccessful attempts, thanks to an artificial intelligence system, which had pre -discovered undesirable sperm.
The star (sperm tracking and recovery) system developed at Columbia University Fertility Center in New York, provides renewed hopes to men diagnosed with ezospheria, a condition where no sperm is found in semen.
Astronomical physics
The system uses space science -inspired imaging technology, which is originally developed to detect distant stars and planets.
Director of Columbia University Fertility Center, Dr. Zeve Williams said, “We are using similar devices designed to find life in the universe to help create life on earth.”
As reported by the Hollywood reporter, researchers used high-resolution imaging to catch more than 8 million frames of a semen sample in less than an hour. With the help of AI, he identified three viable sperm, which was completely missed.
A simple procedure
Earlier, men with azoospermia had some options beyond painful surgical processes or using donor sperm. The star system eliminates the requirement of such aggressive approaches. Once the sperm is located, a robot gently removes them, preserving their viability.
In the case of the couple, recovered sperm was used to fertilize the eggs of the woman through IVF. The fetus was successfully implanted, and she is now five months pregnant.
While the Star method is currently available only in Colombia, the cost of sperm recovery is just less than $ 3,000 – much lower than the total expenditure of IVF, which can exceed $ 30,000 with drugs and testing.
According to Hollywood reporter, male infertility is trying to conceive 10% to 15% American men. With the fall of sperm globally, scientists are searching for environmental and lifestyle factors, including possible contributors, including obesity, diet and inaction.
Dr. Williams said that many patients are already treating using star systems. He said, “Many people who were told that they will never give a father to a biological child, now there is a real chance.” The child is expected in December.
