Aamir Khan’s Lagaan is one of Bollywood’s most loved and iconic films. Recently, actor Yashpal Sharma, who played Lakha in the Oscar-nominated film, revealed one of Khan’s key strategies on the sets. Sharma revealed that Khan took measures to keep his co-stars away from alcohol, conflict and distractions, which contributed to the film’s success.
In a recent interaction with Friday Talkies YouTube channel, he reminisced about how Aamir Khan would sit on the floor and drink tea from paper cups and organise card games for everyone on the set every night. He recalled that Khan would sit in the mud with his tea and form a card club where everyone would gather for a game every evening.
He speculated that this may have been Khan’s way of keeping the crew focused and away from distractions such as women, alcohol and potential conflicts. He said the unity, passion and late nights on set contributed to the film’s success.
Yashpal said that their bond on the set was so strong that Khan used to organize a card party every Diwali. He said that they eat golgappas, watch movies, play cricket and rehearse together. He stressed on Aamir’s humility and said that Khan still invites him to his house for Diwali parties.
Sharma also revealed that when he got the call for the film, he had prepared himself for the worst. Based on his past experiences with stars, he had guessed that Aamir might be arrogant. He also said that some NSD graduates also had a similar attitude. However, he found Aamir to be a wonderful human being above all else.
Meanwhile, on the work front, Khan will next be seen in Sitare Zameen Par alongside Genelia D’Souza. According to a Hindustan Times report, Sitare Zameen Par will focus on Down syndrome. The report mentions that like Tare Zameen Par, Khan aims to highlight another stigmatised condition in society through this film.
The report also states that Khan has discovered a touching story about Down syndrome and the experiences of those affected by it. He wants to address the subject with great sensitivity and hopes to create an impact that promotes equality for individuals suffering from the syndrome.
