In February, researchers of the Conservation Organization Condric Taneerf were about two kilometers from the coast of Taneur Island, in search of sharks, when he saw a more stranger.
Photographer David Zara Boguan filmed a Hampback Anglerfish (Melanosettus johnasniA species of black seadevil) floats near the surface in sunwater. These fish have never been seen alive in daylight before daylight, as they normally live in “Twilight Zone” from 200 meters to 600 meters.
The video has provoked a very sympathetic response on social media, with some people a feminist icon or a figure -like figure, which floats very close to the Sun. The response reflects our thoughts about the deep sea – long -ignored or seen as a scope of demons – can change in the end.
Strange life of anglerfish
Anglerfish are very small as you probably think they are. The filmed sample Boguna was a woman, usually growing up to 15 cm long.
The organisms have been nominated for their bioluminent greed (or Esca). This modified dorsal fin rays can produce a glow used for fish (or angle) for hunting in the slow depth of the sea. Bioluminenexes are produced by symbiotic bacteria that live inside the Bulbs of ESCA.
Male anglerfish decreases iconic greed and is very small, usually reaching a length of only 3 cm.
A male anglerfish spends the first part of his life in search of a woman he will then attach herself. He will eventually fuse his communication system with her to her entire nutrients, and live her life as a parasite or “living testicle”.
It is unknown that this fish was floating vertically near the surface. Researchers have speculated that behavior may be related to changes in water temperature, or that the fish was simply at the end of his life.
The viewers visited the fish for several hours, until it died. Its body was preserved and Santa was taken to the museum of Nature and Archaeology at Cruise Day Taneur, where it will be further studied.
Sympathy for seedwil
The video quickly went viral, countless response videos, artifacts, mems, a picser-style animation and a poem called Ikaras, which is Anglerfish.
A reddit user commented:
I think she is a respected old grandmother who has dreamed of sunlight and the whole life of seeing the world above water. She knows that her time is zero, so she bid farewell to her friends and family and moves towards light and whatever she can hold as her life for her comes as an anglerfish.
A person described the fish as its “feminist Roman Empire”, in the sense of an inspirational passion that played the same role for him that the Roman Empire does for many men.
Boguna and Condric Tanef have commented on public reaction. (The original post is in Spanish, but the automatic English translation of Instagram is below.)
It has become a global icon, it is clear. But away from the attempt of romanticization and humanization, which has been given to its tragic story, I think what has been done for this incident, people have to awaken the curiosity of the sea, especially to young people, and perhaps, it also works that messages about marine ecosystem protection can reach so many people.
Horrific to heroes
The outline of sympathy for anglerfish is unpredictable. With their glowing lore and feng-filled mouths, the organisms have long been the radical horrors of the abyss.
As I have written elsewhere, with the extreme sexual renunciation and parasitism of Anglerfish, with its uncertain anatomy, it has made it “reputed ambassador to Deep C”. Anglerfish or Angler-inspired aliens Star Wars Episode Episode I: The Phantom Menus (1999), Finding Nemo (2003), The Sponge Squarepants Movie (2004) and Luka (2021) have appeared as opponents.

The reception of “Ikaras” (as something calls him) in popular culture indicates an amazing ability to sympathy for animals that are not traditionally cute or beautiful. This is contrary to the fate of the deep sea stain LovelyWhich was voted in the world’s best animal in 2013.
Perhaps the name is a clue: people have tried to reach a creature in the fish, which died as a result of its discovery.
But is our launch scientific reality misunderstood about human emotions and desires on non-human animals? Almost certainly – but, as the researcher of American environment humanities Stacey Alimo has argued, its benefits can also be:
Deep sea creatures are often depicted from another planet as aliens, and I think people are interested in them because we are all interested in innovation and strange and real (…) I think it can be positive, but the idea of foreigners can also cut us with any responsibility.
The deep sea and its inhabitants face increasing dangers due to the effects of seabed mining, plastic pollution and human-inspired climate change. They require all the sympathy they can find.
