The development comes after more than five months Jan Naygan Missed its originally scheduled release date of January 9. Since then, the film has been in limbo due to an unresolved dispute over the Central Board of Film Certification rating. The CBFC’s regional panel had initially recommended a UA 16+ certificate, but the final approval was withheld. At the time of the planned release, KVN Productions had moved the Madras High Court seeking to expedite the certification process.

Legal hurdles and ongoing delays in certification

The CBFC then challenged the single judge’s decision before a division bench of the Madras High Court, which stayed the order on January 9, the day the film was scheduled to release. This sent the certification process back to the starting point. In February 2026, the producers withdrew their writ petition and resubmitted the film for review through the CBFC’s standard process. Although the review committee later screened the film, there were further delays in issuing the certificate and there is still no confirmed release date.

Huge loss to Pongal box office due to delay

The delays have also caused huge financial losses in the distribution chain. Distributors worldwide are estimated to have suffered a loss of around Rs 200 crore, mainly due to interest payments on the money made for the film. Theater owners were also affected during the Pongal 2026 season, as none of the January releases were able to make up for its shortfall. Jan Naygan From the cinema screen.

UK-based distributors Ahimsa and Bolin had already refunded around Rs 8 crore of advance booking after the film did not release in January. Their statement at the time described the refund as painful, but necessary due to uncertainty around the release timeline. The non-theatrical rights deal of the film has also reportedly been cancelled, increasing the financial pressure on KVN Productions.
