A lawsuit seeking to stay the release of actor Shahid Kapoor’s upcoming film hey romeo The case has been filed by Sanobar Shaikh, daughter of gangster Hussain Ustara. It claims that the film is based on the life of his father, an old-time Mumbai gangster who had a long-standing rivalry with underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.

Shaikh has sought directions from the court to appoint a court commissioner or some other person to pre-screen the film and present the report before the court. This case has been filed by lawyer DV Saroj against producer Sajid Nadiadwala and Director Vishal BhardwajHe is also the author of the book from which the film is claimed to have taken inspiration.

Shaikh has claimed that his father worked as a journalist in Mumbai and assisted various government agencies, including the Mumbai Police and the Intelligence Bureau, in curbing criminal activities across India and particularly in the city. He claims that his life was in constant danger due to these activities. The lawsuit states that Ustara had applied to the police commissioner for the bulletproof vest and received approval through a letter dated August 4, 1994.

According to the lawsuit, Ustara had openly defied D-Company and was viewed by its members as a “loose cannon” capable of destabilizing their criminal operations. The lawsuit claims his elimination was aimed at removing a perceived threat and re-establishing Dawood Ibrahim’s dominance. The plaintiff further said that his father’s murder was planned and executed by close associates of Dawood Ibrahim, including Chhota Shakeel. It also claimed that Ustara was working as an informant for the Mumbai Police and was providing intelligence against Dawood Ibrahim’s network. He was assassinated on 11 September 1998.

The suit also refers to social media interviews of former Mumbai Police encounter specialist Pradeep Sharma, in which Sharma said that the film is portrayed as fictional, but its core narrative is derived from the real-life story of Hussain Ustara.

No compensation has been sought so far from Sheikh’s side in the case. The Mumbai Sessions Court will hear the case on February 6, a week before the film’s scheduled release.
