We’ve all experienced that moment of doubt when we look at leftover food or pantry items and wonder, “Is this still good to eat?” As much as we hate to waste food, there are times when food has reached its peak when we have to part with it. When there is no clear expiration date, we sometimes have to trust our instincts and decide whether we want to eat the food or not. Some symptoms of food spoilage are very obvious, but others require a little attention. If you’re looking for ways to identify spoiled food, you’ve come to the right place! Here are 6 easy ways to assess the state of your food.

6 easy ways to know if your food is stale

1. Smell test

The first and most obvious thing to do when looking at stale food is to smell it. Fresh food has a natural, pleasant aroma, while stale or spoiled food often smells musty or sour. Foods most likely to spoil include dairy, bread, and meat. A quick sniff can save you from unpleasant tastes. If you hesitate to taste food because of the smell, it is a clear sign that it has gone bad.

2. Check the template

It goes without saying – if you see mold on your food, it’s automatically a no-go. Mold is easy to identify because it often appears as green, white or discolored spots on bread, fruit, cheese and other perishable items. If you think scraping off a moldy area will make the food safe to eat, think again. The fungus may spread deeper than is visible. If consumed, it can cause serious digestive problems. Always check for mold before eating.

3. Analyze the texture

How food tastes can be a clear indicator of its freshness. Bread that has become hard, chips that have lost their crispness, and vegetables that feel slimy are strong signs of spoiled food. Fresh food has a firm, vibrant texture, while stale food may appear soggy or overly dry. Not only this, but cooked dishes can also indicate the freshness of the food. Trust your hands and feel your food before eating.

4. Taste It (But With Care!)

If the food looks and smells okay, but you’re still not sure, a taste test may be your next step. Take a small piece and analyze the taste. Stale food usually tastes flat, sour or bland. This method works well for biscuits or bread, but be careful when testing perishable items. If the taste seems uncomfortable or strange, spit it out immediately and discard the food.

5. Check expiration dates

When purchasing perishable food, expiration dates are a great indicator of when to dispose of it. Check the “best before” or “use by” dates to assess how fresh the food is. Although some items, such as dry cereals or canned goods, may be safe to use slightly past their best-before date, perishable items such as dairy, eggs and meat should be discarded. Rely on your visual and olfactory instincts for better decisions.

6. Check the packaging

Believe it or not, packaging can tell you a lot about food safety. For canned or sealed goods, look for dents, leaks or any distortion. These may indicate that the food has spoiled due to bacterial growth. Always check for damage to seals, zippers, or vacuum packaging. If the packaging looks damaged, it is best to discard the food.
