Here are 5 tips for creating a food budget you’ll actually follow

1. Plan your meals

Do you know that last-minute decision to order food from outside that seems like a good idea, but then you realise it will ruin your monthly budget? Well, planning meals in advance can help you save yourself the hassle. Every weekend, sit down and decide what you will cook for the week. This simple habit helps you buy only what you need and eliminates the urge to buy unnecessary food items. Also, Indian cuisine has many budget-friendly options like dal, sabzi or pulao that are easy to make and are very economical too.

2. Set a grocery budget per week

We’ve all experienced the feeling of being shocked when checking the bill after grocery shopping. How did those extra chips, chocolates or biscuits get added to the list? Setting a weekly grocery budget can help you. Simply divide your monthly food budget into four weeks and follow it religiously. If you still find it difficult to say no to your favourite purchases, pro tip: leave your card at home and carry a certain amount. Shopping in cash makes you more conscious about your spending than digital transactions.

3. Have a list ready

How many times do you go to the grocery store to buy “just a few things” but end up with a trolley full of things you don’t need? It’s happened, it’s happened. Keeping a shopping list is the best way to avoid buying those random things. Before you go shopping, make a list of everything you need based on your next meal plan. Making a list not only helps you spend wisely but also reduces food waste.

4. Use what you already have

Before heading to the market, make sure you clear out your fridge and cabinets to find out what you actually have. You will probably already have enough ingredients for a few recipes. Try making a simple dal or curry using whatever leftovers you have at home. Make it a weekly habit to clear out the fridge and cook meals from leftovers. Trust us, you will be surprised to see how easily you can do it without spending extra money.

5. Buy in bulk but wisely

Buying in bulk can either be a money-saver or a bad decision, depending on how you do it. Buy only essentials like rice, flour, lentils and spices as they won’t spoil quickly. Make sure not to buy perishable items in bulk as they may spoil quickly and you will be forced to finish them in time. Buying in bulk may save you money in the long run but may cut down on your grocery shopping trips.
