Five more murder cases have been filed against ousted Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, taking the total number of cases against the Awami League leader to 71, a media report said on Tuesday.
Of the new cases, four were filed in Dhaka and one in Rajshahi against the 76-year-old ousted former prime minister, several former ministers and police officials, the Daily Star newspaper reported.
In the first case, Hasina and 48 others were booked for the death of a man named Dulal alias Salim during a massive protest in the Jatrabari area of the city on August 3.
The victim’s brother Mustafa Kamal filed a case against the Awami League president and others in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Saddam Hossain.
According to the Daily Star, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, former Awami League MPs Shamim Osman and Ramesh Chandra are among the accused.
In the second case, Sheikh Hasina along with 21 others were accused of killing Mansur Mia, a machine operator of the Buriganga Filling Station in Basila, Mohammadpur on July 19.
In the third case, Sheikh Hasina and 91 others were sued for the death of a man named Miraj Hussain in Sanarpar in the city’s Demra area on August 5.
The victim’s brother Khurshid Alam filed the case in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Belal Hossain.
The fourth case was registered against Sheikh Hasina and 40 others for the death of 21-year-old Nahidul Islam in Mirpur-10 on July 19.
The victim’s brother Mohammad Sabuj filed the case in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehdi Hasan.
The accused include Quader, Asaduzzaman, Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, Hasina’s sister Sheikh Rehana, son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, Harun and Rashid and former DMP commissioners.
In Rajshahi, SM Salahuddin Ahmed Shamim Sarkar, a member of the Bagha Upazila Chhatra Dal, filed a case against Hasina, former State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam and 52 others, Bagha police station officer-in-charge Abu Siddiqui said.
With four new cases registered in Dhaka, the number of cases against Hasina has risen to 71, the report said.
Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled to India on August 5 following unprecedented anti-government student-led protests against her government over a controversial quota system in jobs.
The Hasina-led government was removed and an interim government was formed with 84-year-old Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus appointed as its chief advisor.
More than 230 people have been killed in Bangladesh in violence that erupted across the country following the fall of the Hasina government, taking the death toll to over 600 since massive protests launched by students against a controversial quota system in government jobs in mid-July.
