Ukraine’s air force said on Tuesday that Russia launched a major attack on Ukraine overnight, shooting down 392 drones and 34 missiles, one of the largest attacks in recent months.Regional officials said at least five people were killed across the country, as air raid sirens continued to sound throughout the night in almost all areas. Two deaths were reported in the Poltava region, while one death each was recorded in Kharkiv, Kherson and Zaporizhia. In Kharkiv, a 61-year-old train passenger died instantly after a drone collided with an electric train in the early morning, according to prosecutors. Local officials said a civilian in Kherson died in his home after the attack. The attacks also targeted critical infrastructure, Moldovan President Maia Sandu said, with attacks on Ukraine’s energy networks severing a key power link between Moldova and Europe. While alternative routes are being used, he blamed Russia for the disruption and warned that the situation remained “delicate”.The attack came a day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Russia was preparing a large-scale attack according to intelligence.Heavy damage and casualties were reported in many areas. In Poltava, two people were killed and seven injured, with photos showing destroyed houses and charred buildings. Zaporizhia faced what officials described as a “large-scale joint missile-drone attack”, killing one person and injuring five.Elsewhere, Russia attacked the Dnipropetrovsk region more than 20 times using drones and artillery, injuring a 76-year-old woman. In Sumy, a minibus driver was injured in a drone strike.Meanwhile, Russian officials said security agencies, including the Federal Security Service, were put on high alert amid intelligence warnings of possible Ukrainian sabotage attacks. Moscow also claimed that its air defenses intercepted 55 Ukrainian drones overnight. The latest escalation emphasizes that as the conflict escalates, cross-border attacks are intensifying, with both sides reporting continued attacks on each other’s territory.
