2025 winners and losers: Motorola

Introduction

Motorola has had a strong year thanks to its Razr foldables, however, the Edge series has fallen a bit short. This brand is one of the few brands available in the US outside the Apple-Google-Samsung trinity and should not be ignored, even if things are not 100% perfect.

Motorola’s mostly clean Android implementation and advanced connectivity features (even on some lower-end models) already add up to some of the better value for money phones on the market.

Winner: Motorola Razr Series

The Razr 60 series – or as it’s known in the US, the Razr 2025 series – has been a smash hit for Motorola. Check out these results from the global foldable market in the second quarter, which were shared by the analyst firm Counterpoint Research,

Motorola’s share doubled from last year and analysts highlighted the success of the Razr 60/Razer 2025. It was the first flip foldable to touch the $700 mark in the US market. Admittedly, Q2 was just before the arrival of the Z Flip7, Z Flip7 FE, and Z Fold7, but it’s still an impressive success.

The Motorola Razr 60 Ultra / Razr Ultra 2025 also deserves praise – it’s upgraded to a flagship chipset (Snapdragon 8 Elite) and a large (for the class) 4,700mAh battery with fast charging. It also has a better display panel and a better main camera than its predecessor.

The Motorola Razr+ 2025 is a bit strange. It doesn’t help that it’s only available in the US. This is a re-release of the Razr Ultra 2024 with one major upgrade – Motorola has acquired Samsung’s IP48 rating for the foldable.

Undecided: Motorola Edge 70

Could the Motorola Edge 70 be the winner of the super-slim wars? Well, the iPhone Air and Galaxy S25 Edge definitely lost (the Edge isn’t even getting a sequel), but Motorola may be too expensive to be called a winner.

This 6.0mm phone isn’t much smaller in terms of battery than the Edge 60 – the 4,800mAh battery is just 400mAh smaller than its 7.9mm predecessor. Its battery life is better than Samsung and Apple phones. Also, the phone has fast 68W wired charging. It also features 15W wireless charging and is bundled with a MagSafe-compatible case in some markets.

We also like the build quality and 6.7″ 1220p+ display. Losing the telephoto camera and microSD slot does hurt the phone, however, as does the downgrade from UFS 4.0 to 3.1.

All that said, the deciding factor will be the price – a solid discount could seriously boost the popularity of the Moto Edge 70.

Loser: Motorola Edge 60 Neo

We wanted to like the Motorola Edge 60 Neo so much – it and its predecessor represent an extremely rare category of phone, the small mid-ranger. With a 6.36” display, it offers a more affordable alternative to the Galaxy S25 and Pixel 10.

However, Motorola never addressed the Neo phone’s camera. They look good on paper – look, a dedicated telephoto camera on a non-flagship phone! – But the image quality is always disappointing. Plus, while the Neo isn’t as expensive as the Galaxy and Pixel phones, it’s not exactly cheap either. Its Dimensity 7400 chipset comes in the entry-level model and not in this price bracket.

Winner: Motorola Edge 60 Pro

For whatever reason, Motorola didn’t make an Ultra model for the Edge 60 series, which leaves the Motorola Edge 60 Pro as the top model. Well, it’s priced as a mid-ranger and we’d rate it as such, we’re just saying that a flagship model would have been appreciated.

This 2025 release switches from the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 (with UFS 2.2 storage) to the Dimensity 8350 Extreme (UFS 4.0) and offers a solid upgrade in performance. The 6,000mAh battery also improves battery capacity compared to the previous model’s 4,500mAh battery. The charging hardware was downgraded (90W wired and 15W wireless vs. 125W and 50W on the Edge 50 Pro), but it’s still plenty fast – with the right wired charger it goes 0-100% in 44 minutes.

The upgraded ultra-wide camera (up from 13MP to 50MP) doesn’t compensate for the downgraded selfie camera (no autofocus), but we were still quite happy with the camera in our review.

Loser: Motorola G Power (2025)

The Motorola G Power (2025) was a promising phone that disappointed us. Its MSRP of $300 was too high for the hardware offered and even now that its price has almost halved, it’s hard to get past some of the phone’s flaws.

The G Power has an attractive design that looks a lot like its more expensive siblings. And Motorola checked plenty of boxes, with a microSD slot, 3.5mm headphone jack, stereo speakers, and even wireless charging (rare on budget phones).

However, the Dimensity 6300 is very underwhelming for this price segment, the camera was subpar overall (even beyond the lack of 4K video) and the 6.8″ LCD panel has uniformity issues. Battery life is also only average. Where’s the power?
