20-year-old Indian-origin man shot dead in Canada, second death within a week

A 20-year-old Indian-origin man working as a security guard was shot dead by a gang in Edmonton, Canada on Friday.

The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has arrested two men and charged them with first-degree murder of Indian-origin man Harshandeep Singh.

The timestamp of the CCTV footage shows that the murder took place on Friday.

According to the police, around 12:30 am on Friday night, they received a call about gunshots inside an apartment building. Upon reaching 107 Avenue, they found an inanimate body in a stairwell and immediately administered first aid. Mr Singh was taken to hospital where he was declared dead.

In CCTV footage going viral on the internet, one person from the three-member gang is seen pushing Mr Singh down the stairs while the other shoots him from behind.

Ivan Ren and Judith Solto, both 30, have been arrested and charged with first-degree murder. Police have recovered a weapon. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

“EPS typically does not release the name of a deceased person until the death is confirmed to be a homicide,” said EPS Homicide Staff Sgt. Rob Billaway said in a press release. “However, in this case, we are releasing Mr. Singh’s name for the purposes of the investigation and in an effort to minimize public safety concerns regarding his unfortunate death.”

This is the second murder in a week.

Earlier on Sunday (December 1), Gursis Singh (22), a first year Business Management student at Lambton College, was stabbed to death by his family member in Ontario, Canada. The suspect, 36-year-old Crossley Hunter, has been charged with second-degree murder.

According to the Sarnia Police Service, they received a call at 4:59 a.m. on Dec. 1 reporting a stabbing. Investigation revealed that a fight had broken out between the two men in the kitchen. During the argument, Mr Hunter picked up a knife and stabbed Mr Singh several times, killing him.
