A 13-year-old girl whose hair got caught in a generator fan suffered serious injuries and underwent a complex scalp replantation surgery.

Doctors at Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, successfully carried out the unprecedented procedure over eight hours, which not only saved the girl from permanent disfigurement but also restored her confidence and ability to lead a normal life.

A young girl from Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh lost her entire skull during an accident at a local fair. After his initial condition was stabilized at a nearby hospital, his family sought advanced care at Amrita Hospital.

Amrita’s pediatric neurosurgeon, Dr. Sachin Gupta, immediately coordinated with the hospital’s team of reconstructive microsurgeons for the case.

“Scalp avulsion is a devastating injury that requires timely intervention and advanced microvascular surgical expertise. During the procedure, we reconnected blood vessels, nerves, and tissues. Despite a delay of approximately 10 hours after injury, the patient responded well, and her recovery has been excellent,” Dr Mohit Sharma, head of the Center for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, said about the complexity of the surgery.

Dr Sharma said that an expert team of anesthesiology, pediatrics and critical care was present for the operation. Special care was provided during the surgery by Dr Neeti Gulati Batra, Senior Consultant in Anaesthesiology, to ensure hemodynamic stability of the patient, i.e. steady blood flow and vital signs.

Dr Vasundhara Jain, senior consultant in plastic and reconstructive surgery, said, “If the transplant had failed, the patient would have required skin grafts to cover his skull bones, which could have resulted in lifelong deformity. This would have resulted in less His age could have had a profound impact on him.” ,

The success of the surgery has changed the girl’s life. Her skull has been restored to almost normal form, and she has returned to school, resuming her daily activities.

His parents expressed their deep gratitude at a press conference. “The doctors not only saved her life but also gave her a second chance to live a normal life,” her father said.
