In a landmark study in PLOS One, women’s brains were found to have 50 percent more olfactory bulbs, or neurons capable of detecting odors, than men. This enhanced biological hardware enables women to have a significantly higher level of sensitivity to complex environmental odors, subtle changes in the chemical composition of their environment, and various pheromone signals that men are unable to detect.
